Sixers make major statement with 130-119 win over Knicks at MSG

Posted

Finishing up the final game of a five-game road trip, the Philadelphia 76ers made their way to New York for a matchup between two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

The Sixers had overcome a slow start to their road trip with the opportunity to take three of five with a win against the Knicks. Their division rivals came into the game sorely in need of a win, having lost their last two.

A fiercely contested matchup wound up in Philadelphia's favor by a final score of 130-119, thanks to the contributions of their stars, from Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey down to rookie VJ Edgecombe.

Each of the Sixers' starters played a crucial role in this win, but perhaps none more impressive than the rookie, who was flying up and down the court, delivering highlight-worthy plays while still consistently contributing hustle to keep the Sixers in front.

Scoring 22 points while collecting two steals and two blocks, Edgecombe was a two-way force who looks prepared well beyond his years for the brightest lights the NBA has to offer.

At only 20 years of age, Edgecombe plays with both a polish and an intensity that is rare for someone who's yet to play 30 games in the NBA. But the burgeoning rookie was only part of the Sixers' success in this game. Philadelphia also saw a massive impact from its two franchise stars, Embiid and Maxey.

While it wasn't his best scoring night, Embiid enjoyed perhaps his most well-rounded game of the season, looking every bit the player the Sixers are going to need if they're to make a push in the Eastern Conference.

With 26 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, Embiid was effective, engaged, and helped spark the team to a win that, while not easy, did not come down to the wire.

Maxey continues to thrive at MSG, averaging over 32 points in his last four games in NY, including 36 on Saturday. The confidence with which Maxey is able to play on one of the NBA's biggest stages is otherworldly. He has continued to improve in each season and now finds himself on the precipice of the MVP race, but with a lot of season left to be played.

Many Sixers deserve praise for this game, but one more worth special mention is Paul George, who has relentlessly played his heart out this season and spearheaded the team's defensive effort. While there are some inconsistencies in his offense, he is slowly regaining his legs under him and continues to be an impactful defender, a sign of his desire and willingness to compete when others would be happy simply collecting a paycheck.

Up next for the Sixers

The Sixers will return home at long last as they prepare for a Monday night matchup against the Denver Nuggets. The matchup will be noticeably without one of its stars, as Nikola Jokic is currently dealing with a hyperextended left knee.

With a well-paced schedule without a back-to-back until the following week, it could be an opportunity for Embiid to extend his consecutive game streak even further to four games.

Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. EST on Monday at the Xfinity Mobile Arena.
