Councilmember Jamie Gauthier (3rd District) will distribute more than 600 pounds of fresh produce and groceries today, providing some relief to residents affected by the federal SNAP benefit freeze.
The giveaway will take place at Gauthier's district office, 606 S. 52nd Street, near the intersection of 52nd Street & Cedar Avenue.
The event will begin at noon and continue until supplies run out. Gauthier is expected to arrive after City Council’s regular meeting, around 12:30 p.m.
Due to the federal government shutdown, SNAP payments will not be made for the month of November to nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians, including the around 472,000 city residents signed up for benefits, according to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration.
Gauthier stated that her weekly produce giveaways — though not a replacement for SNAP — remain a dependable resource during this time of crisis.
Gauthier hosts produce giveaways every Thursday starting at noon at her district office, 606 S. 52nd Street.
