Bryson Stott’s fifth home run of the season secured a 5-4 comeback victory for the Philadelphia Phillies over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Andrew Painter departed after six innings, allowing two runs on three hits. However, the Phillies' rookie settled for another no-decision following the best outing of his young MLB career. Orion Kerkering earned his second win, while Jhoan Duran locked down the save to push the Phillies' winning streak to five games.
Philadelphia scored two runs in the first inning behind sac fly balls from Edmundo Sosa and Adonis Garcia for a 2-0 lead. It was a short-lived advantage as Painter conceded two runs back to Cincinnati on three consecutive singles and a sac fly in the top of the second frame to even the ballgame.
Alec Bohm’s solo homer in the sixth inning put the Phillies back on top, 3-2, and manager Don Mattingly turned to the bullpen despite Painter cruising at 69 pitches. Brad Keller’s first pitch to Sal Stewart found a new home in the right field seats to even the ballgame at three.
Cincinnati secured its first lead in the eighth inning. Matt McLain scored on Spencer Steer’s double to left field off Jose Alvarado, turning the scoreboard in the Reds' direction at 4-3. Alvarado looked like he struck out the next batter, J.J. Bleday, but the call was overturned on a successful ABS challenge. Kerkering entered and produced a fly ball to left field from Stewart to end the scoring threat.
Stott smashed his 2-run home run in the bottom half of the eighth inning, and Duran sauntered out to the mound in the ninth to secure his eighth save on the Phillies' 25th win of the 2026 campaign.
Philadelphia (25-23) and Cincinnati (24-24) are right back in action tomorrow night at 6:40 PM at Citizens Bank Park. Jesus Luzardo (3-3, 5.07 ERA) is scheduled to battle Chase Burns (5-1, 1.87 ERA) in the second matchup of this three-game series.
