Why Eagles' RB Tank Bigsby is poised for a breakout season in 2026

Eagles RB Tank Bigsby is positioned for a much larger role in the team's new outside-zone rushing attack. Here's why he could become Philadelphia's breakout player in 2026.

The Eagles didn’t bring Tank Bigsby to Philadelphia to stand on the sideline, though at times many did question the acquisition.

He was brought along slowly in his first season, but I would not expect that to be the case this year.

His running style fits exactly what this offense wants to become. He’s physical, decisive, and finishes every run with purpose.

If a team was building the ideal complement to Saquon Barkley for Philadelphia’s 2026 rushing attack, you’d end up with Tank Bigsby.

And if everything plays out the way that the new scheme appears, he could be one of the biggest breakout players on the roster in 2026

Scheme

The Eagles are transitioning their ground game to rely heavily on a decisive, one-cut outside zone running scheme, and Bigsby is a perfect schematic fit.

The system demands decisive runners who can quickly read their blocks, make one cut, get downhill, and attack open rushing lanes with aggression. That’s exactly the type of runner Bigsby has been throughout his career.

One of Bigsby’s strengths is how he continues to punish and wear on opposing defenses.

He’s the type of runner who turns short gains into extra yards through physical contact. He rarely goes down easily, and seems to get more effective as the game moves into the second half.

Dynamic duo

While Barkley remains the clear lead back and will command the lion’s share of the touches, the Eagles have a chance to create one of the NFL’s better backfield rotations.

Bigsby’s main role is likely to provide relief for Barkley, allowing Philadelphia to keep both backs fresh over the course of a 17-game season and into the postseason. But that does not mean he will not be productive with the added opportunities.

Bigsby adds a tone-setting running style that travels in all conditions. His value becomes even greater late in games when the Eagles are looking to close out victories, and deep in the season when cold-weather football puts an even greater emphasis on physicality. In those situations, Bigsby’s strength, downhill mentality, and ability to finish runs could directly influence the outcome of games.

More touches

Everything that the Eagles have done this offseason points toward a larger role for Bigsby in 2026.

He should be involved in more offensive snaps, which should ultimately lead to more carries. With the extra opportunities, I expect his production to take a noticeable jump.

I would not be surprised for Eagles running back Tank Bigsby to eclipse 700 rushing yards in 2026.

Conclusion

It will be interesting to see how Eagles OC Sean Mannion and new running game coordinator Ryan Mahaffey navigate a time share in the outside-zone run scheme.

If the Eagles commit to their identity as a run-first offense, Bigsby should have a lot of production in 2026 and could be poised for a breakout season.

Keeping both Bigsby and Barkley fresh throughout the season could give Philadelphia a major advantage when the games matter most. A strong one-two punch in the backfield could be a key factor in the Eagles’ pursuit of a third Lombardi Trophy.
