The injury bug continues to bite the Philadelphia Eagles. The team learned Monday that running back Tank Bigsby will need surgery to repair a core muscle that he injured in the 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
The news was first reported by NFL Insider Ian Rapoport who also confirmed the backup running back will head to the IR, guaranteeing he will be out for at least a minimum of four weeks.
Bigsby filled in for Saquon Barkely who injured his hamstring during the team’s second drive of the game and rushed for 55 yards on 14 carries.
It’s another blow to a battered roster that already has key playmakers DeVonta Smith (hamstring), Dallas Goedert (knee) out with injury, while Lane Johnson is dealing with personal matters and Landon Dickerson has been out since the beginning of the season with a knee injury.
Philadelphia traded for Bigsby last season, sending 2026 fifth-round and sixth-round picks to Jacksonville. After struggling as a kick returner, the former third-round pick out of Auburn in 2023 showed flashes of being a productive backup to Barkley.
Last season, he averaged 5.9 yards per carry on 58 attempts and rushed for 344 yards and two touchdowns. This season, Bigsby rushed for 91 yards on 28 carries with a touchdown. He saw the bulk of the workload in Week 2 against Tennessee when Barkley left in the first quarter with a stinger in his neck.
With the injury, it leaves Will Shipley as the lone healthy back on the active roster with veteran Dameon Pierce and former Dallas Cowboy Jaydon Blue on the practice squad who could both be elevated ahead of the London game against Jacksonville.
