Travis Sanheim secures Flyers’ overtime win vs St. Louis Blues

The Philadelphia Flyers secured a series win over the St. Louis Blues thanks to an overtime goal by Travis Sanheim.

Philadelphia found itself trailing 2-0 after the opening period, with Blues defenseman Justin Faulk striking twice on Dan Vladar. Faulk, coming off his 1,000th NHL game Tuesday night in Toronto, was playing with confidence and set the tone early for St. Louis.

Despite the rough start, the Flyers settled in and began to regain control. With Travis Konecny and Bobby Brink switching lines—Brink elevated to the first unit and Konecny slotted onto the third—both players began generating more open ice and better looks, even if the finishing touch wasn’t there right away. It was Rodrigo Abols who finally broke through early in the second period, cutting the deficit in half and giving the Flyers momentum.

Philadelphia continued pushing the pace, peppering the Blues’ defense and forcing Joel Hofer to make several high-quality saves. Hofer was sharp in spite of the Blues’ inconsistent season, but the pressure eventually cracked. Midway through the third, Tyson Foerster buried the game-tying goal, officially erasing the Blues’ two-goal lead. St. Louis has gained an unfortunate reputation this year for coughing up multi-goal advantages—including a four-goal collapse against Detroit—and this one became another addition to the list.

With seconds left in regulation and Hofer on the bench for the extra attacker, Konecny nearly ended it with a long one-timer, but his bid for the empty net just missed. That sent the game into overtime, where the Blues entered 0-5 this season in games extending past 60 minutes.

Both teams opened overtime cautiously, taking care of the puck and avoiding risky decisions. But after a Flyers odd-man rush, Travis Sanheim buried the winner—his fourth career overtime goal—and sealed the comeback victory.

The win gives the Flyers two more critical standings points and sends them into Saturday’s matchup against the New Jersey Devils with growing confidence. The Devils, one of the NHL’s hottest teams, will provide a strong test as Philadelphia looks to keep building momentum.
