Tyrese Maxey passes Allen Iverson, sets 76ers franchise record for made threes

Posted

In just 375 games, Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey has surpassed NBA legend Allen Iverson for the all-time franchise record in three-pointers made.

Against the Miami Heat on Thursday night, Maxey came out of the gate aggressively, searching for his shot from the opening tip. Whether it was with the record in mind or more likely an attempt to get hot and build an early lead in a crucial game, threes were on Maxey’s mind early on, and he was connecting too.

Maxey took five threes within the first ten minutes of the contest, connecting on three to tie Iverson for the franchise record. On his sixth attempt of the quarter, Maxey set the record — wearing the Sixers’ iconic “Iverson era” black uniform as well — and Philadelphia fans rose from their seats to applaud their young star for his accomplishment.

When the Philadelphia 76ers drafted Maxey with the 21st pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, few expected that he would be passing Iverson in franchise records so quickly, or even at all.

Maxey was a talented shooter in high school, but struggled in his lone season at Kentucky, which ended with the COVID-19 pandemic. That performance seemed to have left a taste in the mouths of scouts as Maxey, initially projected as a lottery pick, fell to Philly, and he’s improved gradually and drastically since then, becoming one of the premier shooters in the league.

The Philadelphia 76ers’ all-time record currently stands at 887, as Maxey connected on yet another three-point shot in that same quarter, and that number will only rise from there.
