Ukrainian Folk Festival returns with food, music, dance and culture

Posted

The sights, sounds, flavors, and traditions of Ukraine are coming to Pennsylvania this weekend.

This Sunday, Aug. 23, the Ukrainian American Sport Center–Tryzub will once again host its Ukrainian Folk Festival from noon to 8 p.m., and 2026's event will commemorate the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, as well as America's 250th.

At the event, patrons will be immersed in different folk culture firsthand, like learning about the symbolism of the traditional pysanka, the Ukrainian Easter egg and the rhythms of the Hopak.

The fest is also a hub to try traditional Ukrainian foods, baked goods, barbecue, picnic fare and refreshments alongside a vendors’ grove, art displays and a bazaar featuring Ukrainian crafts. Living Ukrainian history exhibitors — including The Banner of Jasna Gora and St. Michael’s Kozaks — will also be on site with demonstrations and reenactments.

The centerpiece of the day is “Celebrate Liberty and Unity,” an outdoor concert set to run from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The program will feature performances by the Hromovytsia Ukrainian Dance Ensemble of Chicago, Voloshky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, Spirit of the Dance Ukrainian Folk Ballet and Ukrainian singer-songwriter Shanis (known as the Ukrainian voice of Disney’s Elsa in 'Frozen').

The program will also showcase violinist Innesa Tymochko Dekajlo and the Vox Ethnika Orchestra.

The celebration will continue from 5 to 8 p.m. with live music and dancing by the Vox Ethnika Band performing mix of Ukrainian and East European music alongside traditional, ballroom, rock and other selections.

Admission is $20 and available the day of the event at the gate only. Children under 15 are admitted free. Free parking is also available on site (Lower State and County Line Roads in Horsham), and a portion of every paid admission will be donated to relief efforts benefiting war victims in Ukraine.
