Philadelphia Union head to BMO Field on Wednesday night carrying rare momentum, a first clean sheet of the 2026 MLS season, as they face Toronto FC in one of the most congested stretches of their calendar year. After a disastrous start to 2026, the Union is finally showing signs of life, largely thanks to a resurgent defense and the coach's description of the team's "excellent" physical state amid a congested schedule.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of Wednesday's trip to BMO Field, Carnell struck an optimistic tone, emphasizing that the 0-0 draw against D.C. United was a significant step forward. While the team is still searching for offensive fluidity, the defensive foundation is finally solidifying. After conceding 12 goals in their first eight matches, the Union has recorded back-to-back games without a defeat, a run highlighted by their first clean sheet of the season.

The primary architect of this shift has been a stingy backline. While the Union has historically dominated possession, they are now turning that control into defensive resilience. Carnell elaborated on the tactical shift that has halted their early-season bleeding, noting that the secret has been making themselves difficult to break down.

"If you look at the faces around here, everyone feels like it's a step in the right direction. Everyone feels like it felt right, and it looked right, and defensively, in order to win games and put yourself in a position to win games, you mustn't concede, and we didn't do that now, so it's a clean sheet, and we make sure that we can build off of that.“  - Union Head Coach, Bradley Carnell

“I felt over the last two, three weeks defensively, that's been a real strong talking point for us,” Carnell said. “We haven't given too much away, and I think, if I am not mistaken, shots against us, I think we were tied third in the league best defensive records from shots against, shots on goal against were 5th or 6th if I am not mistaken.”

However, maintaining that defensive integrity in Toronto presents a unique challenge. The Reds are enjoying a six-match unbeaten streak and have turned BMO Field into a fortress, extending their home unbeaten run to 12 matches. For Philadelphia to snap a historically difficult run of form in Toronto, where they have won just four of 18 visits, physical preparation will be key.

With the schedule piling up, Carnell is leaning on his squad's fitness levels to weather the storm. The coach highlighted that the team's physical metrics give him confidence that they can compete with a high-flying Toronto side.

"Physically, I think we are in excellent space right now. Credit to everyone, they've done a really good job and we're getting some guys back, hopefully Edi Davis is getting back every single day a little bit more, same as Augustine, Anello today joined us and looked pretty good, so hopefully these are all gonna be options down the line in our quest to get three points on the road in these next two games," Carnell added.

The Union's challenge remains their offense. Ranked near the bottom of the league in goals scored, the pressure will fall on goalkeeper Andre Blake to keep the game close while the forwards search for a breakthrough. If the Union is to leave Canada with points, it will be first because its defense held the line against a potent Toronto attack. For Carnell, the process is slow, but the defensive corner has finally been turned.
