Carnell hurt by defensive "anomaly" as Union throws away two-goal lead against Toronto

Philadelphia Union boss Bradley Carnell feels his team's collapse vs. Toronto isn't the norm. Can they turn things around fast against Crew SC on Saturday?

For 52 minutes on Wednesday night, the Philadelphia Union looked like a team that had finally turned a corner. Bradley Carnell's side was in full control at BMO Field, holding a commanding two-goal lead over Toronto FC and seemingly cruising toward a third consecutive unbeaten match. Then it all fell apart, so badly that the head coach could not hide his hurt.

Carnell's Union blundered away two different leads at Toronto

The Union had appeared firmly in control when Milan Iloski converted a breakaway just before half-time to open the scoring, capping a disciplined opening 45 minutes. Momentum carried seamlessly into the second half, where a Danley Jean Jacques effort deflected into the net to double Philadelphia's lead and seemingly put the game to bed. For a team that had endured six consecutive defeats at the start of the 2026 MLS season, a second road win of the campaign felt well within reach.

But Toronto had other ideas. U.S. Men's National Team forward Josh Sargent jump-started the rally in the 56th minute, and eight minutes later, Kobe Franklin found the equalizer to level the match at 2-2. The collapse, arriving in a frantic eight-minute spell, undid everything the Union had worked so carefully to construct.

Philadelphia briefly reclaimed the lead in the 89th minute through Nathan Harriel, appearing to have survived the scare. But Gavran's headed goal from a corner in the sixth minute of stoppage time was the ultimate dent to Union’s night. It was only the third goalkeeper goal in MLS history.

For Carnell, the manner of the defensive breakdown was what stung most. In the days leading up to the fixture, the South African coach had placed the Union's defensive improvement at the forefront of his messaging.

"Over the last few weeks, that has been a good talking point for us,” he said. “We haven't given too much away, and we're among the best defensive sides in terms of shots against. Wednesday's meltdown ran directly counter to that narrative.” - Union head coach, Bradley Carnell

Is Philly returning to its early-season struggles?

The capitulation was particularly jarring given the Union's recent defensive resurgence. After starting the season with six consecutive defeats, Carnell's men had recorded a clean sheet against D.C. United just days earlier and was beginning to show real structural solidity. That progress evaporated rapidly once Toronto found its rhythm.

"They started stressing us a little bit in the wider areas," Carnell explained. "Jonathan Osorio started rolling out and pushing Franklin up a little bit higher, and then Malik Henry comes in and makes a difference to the game in the 1-v-1s on the sidelines." - Union head coach, Bradley Carnell

Despite the heartbreaking finish, Carnell urged perspective, framing the defensive disaster as an outlier rather than a return to early-season form.

"I think the trend has been really good from us. I think we've been really strong defensively," he said. "And I would say this was an anomaly for what I've seen over the last couple of weeks." - Union head coach, Bradley Carnell

With a Saturday visit to Columbus Crew looming, the Union has little time to dwell on their collapse. Rather than panic, they “have to let that go and build on the positives and make sure we look at the negatives". - Union head coach, Bradley Carnell
