It was a busy Monday morning regarding current and new candidates for the Philadelphia Eagles’ vacancy for their offensive coordinator position.
Here’s a look at all the reported updates:
There seemed to have been some momentum surrounding the young offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. Doyle, who has worked under offensive guru Ben Johnson, was a potential candidate for the Eagles.
However, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the position and will remain with the Bears.
The Eagles were also interested in LSU coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. and the two parties spoke about the vacancy but he opted to stay with the Tigers and Lane Kiffin according to Russini.
Weis Jr. was the only known college coach linked to the Eagles.
Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Eagles interviewed Dolphins’ offensive coordinator Frank Smith.
Smith spent the last four seasons as the offensive coordinator with Miami, working closely with Mike McDaniel, who seemingly was one of the top targets for Philadelphia. Smith has a solid track record of coaching in the NFL, starting in 2010 as the New Orleans Saints offensive line coach until 2014.
He then joined the Bears’ staff as a tight end coach from 2015-17 and then latched on with the Raiders from 2018-20. In 2021, he was the run-game coordinator and offensive line coach for the Chargers.
Russini also reported that the Eagles are set to interview Houston Texans’ quarterback coach Jerrod Johnson for the vacant OC position.
Johnson, has been involved in the interview process for offensive coordinator positions in the past. He has been involved in numerous searches, including with the Eagles after the 2023 season prior to the hiring of Kellen Moore.
Johnson has been with Houston for the last three seasons and was a factor in C.J. Stroud’s impressive rookie season where the quarterback won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023.
Funny thing about their interest in Johnson is that the Eagles signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and he spent two weeks with the team before being cut.
A trio of candidates have reportedly been asked by the Eagles to come to the NovaCare Complex for an in person interview.
Most recently, former Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard had his second interview according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz.
Current Indianapolis Colts' offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter had his second interview on Wednesday according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler while Packers' quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion also had a second interview with the team NFL Insider Mike Garafolo reported.
