USA, Canada burst out of the gates in early Winter Olympic play as journey to Gold begins

While tournament play officially began on Wednesday at the 2026 Winter Olympics, it was Thursday that the North American heavyweights finally took the ice.

The Canada men's national ice hockey team opened their tournament in dominant fashion, shutting out the Czechia men's national ice hockey team 5–0 in a complete, controlled performance. From the opening puck drop, Canada dictated the game. Nineteen-year-old Macklin Celebrini got things going offensively, and the momentum never slowed. Veterans Mark Stone and Bo Horvat extended the lead, while stars Nathan MacKinnon and Nick Suzuki added insurance.

But the story of the game was between the pipes. Jordan Binnington was flawless, turning aside every shot he faced to secure the shutout. Calm, composed, and sharp when tested, Binnington anchored a defensive effort that allowed little room for Czechia to generate sustained pressure. It was the kind of statement win that reinforces Canada’s gold-medal expectations.

Later in the day, the United States men's national ice hockey team powered past the Latvia men's national ice hockey team 5–1 in their own opener. The U.S. needed a period to settle in, but once they found rhythm, their depth took over. Brock Nelson led the way offensively, while Tage Thompson, Brady Tkachuk, and captain Auston Matthews added to the scoring surge. In net, Connor Hellebuyck was steady with 16 saves,  helping the Americans pull away after a competitive start.

Thursday belonged to North America. If this is how both teams begin, the journey to gold will be cinematic.
