West Philly holiday drive provides families in need with food, winter coats

Posted

The Enterprise Center CDC will host a Turkey and Coat Drive to support 300 West Philadelphia families in need on Friday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Malcolm X Park, 5100 Pine Street.

Each family will receive a complete Thanksgiving meal kit including a turkey, corn, gravy, stuffing, yams, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, cranberry sauce, butter, and cornbread mix. Residents will also have the option of receiving a coat and other winter attire including a sweatshirt, hat, socks and gloves.

Supporting families in need

Countless families across Philadelphia are feeling the pressure and having trouble affording everyday groceries, let alone Thanksgiving dinner, organizers said. The goal of the Turkey and Coat drive is to provide relief to families in need.

The outreach efforts are being spearheaded by Enterprise Center CDC, which partners with local businesses and residents to drive revitalization along the 52nd Street commercial corridor—long recognized as “West Philly’s Main Street.”

How to register

Those interested in receiving a Thanksgiving meal kit or a coat are encouraged to register in advance online or by calling 215-895-4000. Calls can be made Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; those who call outside those hours may leave a voicemail and will receive a return call to confirm their RSVP. A limited number of meal kits will also be available for walk-ups on the day of the event.

Donating coats, winter attire

Individuals and organizations interested in donating coats and other winter attire to the drive can do so by purchasing them online or dropping off items at the Enterprise Center offices located at 277 South 52nd Street, and 4548 Market Street. All coats and winter attire should be in new condition. No food donations will be accepted.
