Winter storm warning: "Bomb cyclone" set to hit Philadelphia

Posted

Meteorologists are warning residents in Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs of a winter storm that will likely turn into a "bomb cyclone" Monday evening, bringing intense winds and plummeting temperatures to the area.

A wind advisory is in effect for Philadelphia now through Tuesday afternoon, with winds up to 25 miles per hour and gusts up to 50 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

A bomb cyclone forms when a swift drop in atmospheric pressure triggers hurricane-strength winds and intense precipitation. In Philadelphia, temperatures soared to 60 degrees on Monday, but are expected to drop into the 20s overnight.
