Erling Haaland leads Norway to Quarterfinals after second half brace against Brazil on day two of the World Cup Round of 16

Posted

Erling Haaland scored a brace in the second half of Sunday's Round of 16 matchup against Brazil to lead Norway to its first-ever quarterfinal appearance at the World Cup. Norway won 2-1.

Haaland is now level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé in the Golden Boot race. All three players have seven goals apiece.

Norway was one of the favorite dark-horse teams to watch in the tournament, and they are now among the final eight.

Neymar converted on a penalty in the 90+10' to see him score in each of his four World Cup appearances in his career, but it was far too late for any serious comeback for Brazil.

A first half that ended scoreless ended up creating a dramatic second half. It was Haaland again who led his country to another victory, continuing a mighty World Cup run.

World Cup Round of 16 - Brazil vs Norway

Norway nearly took a fast 1-0 lead in the second minute, but a goal from Patrick Berg was evidently called offside.  A Norwegian dream start was put on hold.

Bruno Guimarães had the chance to put Brazil ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute, but his penalty attempt was shut down by Ørjan Håskjold Nyland. Guimarães stuttered in his run-up and failed to send Nyland in the opposite direction.

Norway controlled possession through the first 45 minutes, and both sides had two shots on goal apiece. Nyland and Allison Becker turned away each shot they faced to enter the first half in an even 0-0 deadlock.

Carlo Ancelotti made his first substitution for Brazil in the 58th minute, bringing on Endrick for Matheus Cunha. It only took Endrick one minute to come close to putting Brazil ahead, but a weak finish on the ball saw it go wide of the goal.

In the 67th minute, Neymar made his way onto the pitch for Gabriel Martinelli.

Norway came close to scoring in the 75th minute. Andreas Schjelderup fired a low shot towards the left side that was saved by Alisson.

Four minutes later, Haaland struck. A cross into the box from Schjelderup saw Haaland leap above his Premier League foe Gabriel and send the ball into the net with a header. These two have a storied history in the Premier League, and it's transferred over to the international level with Haaland continuing to do what he does best: score goals.

Norway came close to a near wild own-goal in the 85th minute, but Nyland just got enough of his fingers to push the ball out of play. If he had reacted even a millisecond slower, the match would've been level 1-1.

After a close call for Norway, Haaland struck again in the 90th minute. Schjelderup set him up again, and Haaland used his time and patience to drill a shot into the bottom right corner. 2-0 Norway and seven goals for Haaland in the tournament.

Brazil was given a penalty late into stoppage time after Leo Østigard caught Casemiro with an elbow when they were both in the air for an aerial challenge. Neymar stepped into the box and put the ball into the right side of the net. He had a few words for Nyland after scoring, but Nyland didn't care; his team was on its way to the Quarterfinals, and Brazil would be heading home.

A masterclass from Haaland saw him become just the eighth European player to score in each of his first four World Cup appearances. He is the first since Christian Vieri in 1998. Haaland has also scored in his last 14 international matches with 27 goals in total.
