Group E of the World Cup is another interesting and competitive one. You've got Germany, who, at first glance and based on their history of winning 4 World Cups, look to be heavy favorites to top the group. But Ecuador and the Ivory Coast, two teams that did well in qualifying for the tournament, will be applying pressure right behind the European powerhouse, looking to take over the top spot if the Germans slip up. And then you've got Curaçao, participating in the competition for the first time, and as the smallest country ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, making Group E full of intrigue and excitement with each match.
Germany is a team that comes into any World Cup and draws lots of attention based solely on their pedigree and the 4 stars sitting above their crest. But since lifting the trophy back in 2014, the Germans have struggled on the big stage, failing to advance past the Group Stage in each of the last two tournaments in Russia and Qatar.
Currently ranked 10th in FIFA’s overall rankings, Germany is led by manager Julian Nagelsmann, who has seen success in the Bundesliga but has been in charge of the National team for fewer than 40 games heading into the World Cup. Nagelsmann is a tactician and often tinkers with the team’s setup and configuration - sometimes to a fault, in the opinion of German critics.
Despite a disappointing run of form that saw Germany crash out of the UEFA Nations League Semi-Finals and start World Cup qualifying with a loss to Slovenia, Nagelsmann’s side breezed through the rest of the qualifiers on their way to winning 8 consecutive matches leading up to their final friendly with the US before the World Cup.
While Germany isn’t the strongest looking team on paper in the World Cup, they certainly have some firepower in their squad in players like Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, and Florian Wirtz. 31-year-old Leon Goretzka will add some experience in the midfield, while Center Backs Jonathan Tah and Niko Schlotterbeck hold down the backline in front of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who will be appearing in his 5th World Cup.
Germany will start the World Cup against Curaçao, which has to be 3 points in the bag if you’re Julian Nagelsmann. They’ll then face the Ivory Coast in Matchday 2 and, finally, Ecuador on the final matchday of the Group Stage to decide which two teams advance to the Knockouts.
Germany has to be one of the favorites to advance out of Group E, but they’ve also failed to make it into the Knockout rounds in the past two World Cups, so can we really expect this year to be any different for the Germans?
Ecuador enters the 2026 World Cup as one of the best teams from South America and boasts one of the best defensive units in National team football, hoping to lead La Tri through the Group Stage and into the Knockout Round for the first time since 2006.
Ecuador is traveling over to North America in solid form, currently on an unbeaten streak of 18 consecutive games, with their last loss coming all the way back in September of 2024. Since then, La Tri have put together a record of 7 wins, 11 draws, and 0 losses, and have not allowed more than 1 goal in any match. While Ecuador’s backline is one of the best in the World Cup, their attack leaves a bit to be desired, scoring more than once on just 4 occasions during that same span, and settling for seven 0-0 draws across that stretch as well.
La Tri is led by coach Sebastian Beccacece, who took over for Félix Sánchez after Ecuador’s loss in the Copa America Quarter-Final to Argentina. Since his appointment, Ecuador has become one of the most structured and hard-to-beat teams in the world, but Beccacece has also brought energy and excitement back to the national team, and is a coach that fans of Ecuador really seem to like.
Ecuador’s backline features Club Brugge’s Joel Ordóñez, Arsenal’s Piero Hincapié, and PSG’s Willian Pacho. But in the midfield is their shining star, Moisés Caicedo, who never stops working, is the best ball distributor on Ecuador’s national team, and can chip in offensively when joining the attack.
After cruising through World Cup qualifiers, placing 2nd in their group to only Lionel Messi and reigning World Cup champs Argentina, Ecuador will look to keep their unbeaten streak going on the big stage with their first Match against the Ivory Coast, which is no easy task. They’ll then move on to Philadelphia, where they face Curaçao, a team Ecuadorian fans will feel confident they can get a result against, before taking on Germany in what could be a decisive Matchday 3 showdown in New York/New Jersey.
Côte d'Ivoire is heading to North America for their 4th FIFA World Cup, and the nation’s first since the 2014 edition in Brazil. Ivory Coast has a lot of hype around their team heading into the 2026 tournament, and fans hope to see them advance through the Group Stage and into the Knockout Rounds on the big stage for the first time ever.
Côte d'Ivoire, ranked 34th overall in FIFA's rankings, punched its ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after sailing through Group F of the CAF Qualification stage, putting together an impressive 8W-2D-0L record and not allowing a single goal during that span. Since the start of 2025, Ivory Coast’s only losses have come in friendlies in 1-0 results against New Zealand and Saudi Arabia, and an African Cup of Nations loss to Egypt.
Côte d'Ivoire is led by head coach Emerse Fae, who played for the Ivory Coast in the nation’s World Cup debut back in 2006. Fae took over the squad in 2024 in the middle of the African Cup of Nations run after the sacking of Jean-Louis Gasset. Fae led Côte d'Ivoire to winning the tournament and their 3rd AFCON title.
Emerse Fae puts a lot of focus on defensive structure, and hitting teams from the counterattack and from individual performances out on the wing. In the midfield are captain Franck Kessié and 20-year-old Christ Inao Oulaï, who will likely both face Nottingham Forest’s Ibrahim Sangaré. Former Arsenal winger and La Liga player of the year candidate, Nicolas Pépé, will lead the charge out on the wing for Fae, with Inter Milan’s Ange-Yoan Bonny, Crystal Palace’s Evann Guessand, and Manchester United’s Amad Diallo offering additional support in the attack. Ivory Coast’s backline will be led by centerback Evan Ndicka of AS Roma.
Côte d'Ivoire, who are using Philadelphia Union’s Subaru Park as their home base during the World Cup, will be playing a friendly against Philadelphia Union 2 on June 8th, and will hold an open practice at Subaru Park on June 12th. Both events are free with online ticket registration.
The Elephants will start their World Cup journey against Ecuador here in Philadelphia, the first World Cup match happening in the City of Brotherly Love. It’ll be a big one for Côte d'Ivoire, who will want to start the tournament off on the right foot if they have hopes of advancing through the group. Their 2nd match will be against Germany, and will be another important match in deciding who from Group E will see their way through to the Knockout round. And finally, Fae’s side will end the group stage against Curaçao back in Philadelphia, where they’ll hope to punch their ticket to the next round, and not pack up their things to go home.
One of the best stories heading into the 2026 World Cup is that of Curaçao, which is competing in the tournament for the first time and will be the smallest nation to do so. Located 40-ish miles north of the Venezuela Coast, the small autonomous island within the Kingdom of the Netherlands has worked its way up the FIFA totem pole and achieved the unthinkable for many who support the Blue Wave - qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.
Curaçao is the lowest-ranked team in Group E and one of the lowest-ranked in the entire World Cup, but they earned their right to play in North America this summer through grit and determination in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers, posting a perfect 3W-3D-0L record during the third and final stage. During that stretch, the Blue Wave got two important draws against Trinidad and Tobago and a big 2-0 win against Jamaica, setting them up for a real shot at qualifying for the first time ever. Then on November 18th, Curaçao put together a scoreless 0-0 draw against Jamaica, which officially punched their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Curaçao has had some back-and-forth over who is leading this team through the World Cup. 78 Dick Advocaat, who was set to become the oldest coach to participate in the FIFA World Cup, chose to step aside in February after his daughter fell ill. Dutch coach Fred Rutten took charge in Advocaat’s absence in March, but recently stepped down in May after losses to Australia and China, amid reported pressure from fans and players to bring back Advocaat now that his daughter's health was improving. Shortly after Rutten’s departure, Advocaat was reinstated as Curaçao coach and will lead the team to North America in the country’s first World Cup this summer.
Curaçao is led by Captain and midfielder Leandro Bacuna, who spent a number of seasons playing in the Premier League. Joining him in the attack are Sheffield United’s Tahith Chong and Middlesbrough’s Sontje Hansen. Curaçao will rely on Armando Obispo from PSV Eindhoven in defense.
Curaçao is going to have a tough time getting points out of Group E. They’ll start things off against Germany, then head to Kansas City to take on Ecuador, and finish things off in Philadelphia against the Ivory Coast.
