Inside the new Yume Head Spa at Joseph Anthony Salons

Spring means a fresh start — and that includes your scalp.

Joseph Anthony is a well-known salon brand in the Philly area, with two locations throughout the state in Springfield and Glen Mills. The salons are known for blending beauty, relaxation, and unique luxury with options like a Turkish bath room with aqua experiences and soft pack float therapy, which essentially allows visitors to float without getting wet while receiving treatments.

The brand’s latest offering, however, focuses more on one aspect of the body — your hair.

Conducted in specialized beds that allow a soothing waterfall to flow over your head, the new Yume Head Spa at Joseph Anthony aims to deliver a range of benefits, including detoxification, balanced oil production, improved dandruff control, enhanced circulation, and stress relief. The goal is to achieve all that in as relaxing a way as possible—so they’ve added semi-private salon suites and specialized technicians to elevate the experience.

“Our goal has always been to bring the most innovative and indulgent wellness services to our guests,” says owner Joe Gaglioti. “The Head Spa not only revitalizes the scalp and hair but also melts away stress, offering a level of relaxation people rarely get to experience.”

The concept originates from Japan and was developed by the Japanese company Takara Belmont. The word “Yume” means “dream”— if that gives you an idea of where this treatment wants you to land when you experience it.

The service starts with a consultation and scalp analysis, and this is where things get personalized. Based on whatever you need (for things like dryness, buildup or sensitivity), the treatment will be tailored to your scalp.

Then comes the deep detox and exfoliation, which the salon describes as a thorough cleanse that goes beyond a typical shampoo. Essentially, an exfoliating scrub works to remove buildup, excess oil, and dead skin, while detoxifying treatments help reset the area.

Then comes the treatment's centerpiece—the “waterfall” experience. The methodical massage movements are designed to lull you into a near-sleep state. As Joseph Anthony notes, this phase is just as much about calming your nervous system as it is about caring for your hair.

Throughout the treatment, shiatsu-inspired scalp massage techniques are also included, applying targeted pressure to relieve tension in the scalp, neck, and shoulders. The treatment also includes a shampoo and conditioning process with hydrating masks, toners or serums applied directly to the scalp. These treatments are often enhanced with micro-mist or steam, which is said to allow the products to penetrate more deeply and effectively.

But what truly elevates the experience is the immersive, sensory environment. Dim lighting, calming music, and subtle aromatherapy is part of your experience—as is a complimentary foot bath and warm chocolate chip cookies (a signature of Joseph Anthony salons). The session concludes with another analysis of your hair, with the option to add on a professional blowout or styling service.

Overall, the experience is best described as a facial for your scalp—blending deep cleansing, therapeutic massage, intensive hydration, and full-body relaxation. The goal goes beyond just improving your hair: It’s about relieving stress, promoting scalp health, and leaving you with a complete sensory reset.

The Yume Headspa treatment is currently being offered at the Glen Mills and Springfield locations. Bookings ($175 for 50 minutes or $250 for 80 minutes) are available via josephanthony.com.
