The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is spending the 2024 sunny season with a series of both fun and educational activities—and while here, locals can partake in events getting you up close and personal to dinosaurs, insects and everything in between.
In July and August, Philadelphians can head to the Academy for its Dino-Mite summer, which features 30 species in its Dinosaur Hall, plus ways to dig for fossils in “The Big Dig.” The activation will also feature animals of the rainforest and ways to learn about the environment they call home, a deep dive into the beetles of the world, a summer turtle tour and much more.
Later in the season (Aug. 10-11), Philadelphians can return to the cultural institution for another big event—Bug Fest. The occasion is a fan favorite for the Academy and boasts scientist-guided Bug Walks on the Parkway, “Roach Races”, ways to explore specimens from the Academy’s world-class Entomology Collection, scientist meet and greets, a marketplace with local artists and other unique events.
Plus, the Academy’s newest exhibition, ‘Under the Canopy’ will also be on display until Sept. 2. The new showcase highlights the world of rainforests and the animals that inhabit them—it also includes live animals, like a two-toed sloth named Maple and human-size, climbable sculptures for kids among other interactive elements.
Those who head to the venue this summer can also check out the Academy’s other showcase (on display until Sept. 29). Titled ‘Life Onto Land: The Devonian,’ this display centers on the Earth 350 million years ago through animations, giant murals and models, CT scans, rare fossil specimens and maps.
As a bonus this summer, from now until Aug. 4, visitors can receive $5 off admission to the Academy of Natural Sciences within 30 days of visiting the Franklin Institute when they show their proof of purchase from The FI, or vice versa.
There are also a few stand-alone reasons to head to the Academy of Natural Sciences this summer, including a sensory-friendly morning on June 9, from 9 to 11 a.m. and for the annual Wawa Welcome America activation on July 3. On that date, visitors will be welcome to visit ‘Under the Canopy’, Dinosaur Hall, ‘Life Onto Land: The Devonian’ and everything else the museum has to offer on a special Pay What You Wish Wednesday.
Those interested in geology can also partake in an event on June 13, or curious minds looking for a unique way to dine can head to the Academy on June 27. On the 13 at 6 p.m., ‘Reading the Rocks: How Geology Tells the Earth’s Story’ will be in full swing for a WHYY/ Academy Speaker series with Maiken Scott and geologist/author Marcia Bjornerud in attendance.
Then on June 27, 12th Street Catering and the Academy are joining together for the second dinner in their sustainable dining series, titled Dining for a Greener Future. The reception-style, rainforest-themed dinner and drinks experience will feature bites from Chef Adam DeLosso, a chance to explore ‘Under the Canopy’ and more.
The venue is also offering a few Summer Camp options this summer, more information and dates can be found online. For a full list of events and offerings at the Academy of Natural Sciences (1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway), visit ansp.org
