AMERICAN SWEDISH HISTORICAL MUSEUM

The longest day of the year is almost here, and that calls for some celebration. Here is where to commemorate the Summer Solstice in Philly this Saturday, June 21, and beyond.

American Swedish Historical Museum

The ASHM’s event is a bit unique—to celebrate the Summer Solstice in Philly, the Museum is commemorating the longest day of the year Swedish style. Midsommarfest is a play on Midsommar, one of Sweden’s most important holidays and a day to rejoice in the coming of summer at a time when daylight is at its longest.

The ASHM’s celebration will take place on June 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. and will feature activations for the whole family. Highlights include traditional Swedish food, live music provided by the Last Chance duo, games and activities, plus flower crowns and refreshments will be available for purchase. Visitors can also check out the museum’s Swedish used book sale and Mormor’s Attic Shop, which is filled with “second-hand treasures.”

Tickets are $8 for ASHM members; $10 for nonmembers; $5 for children 5-12; and children under 5 are free. Tickets are available at the gate or online.

While there, visitors can find food to-go from the patio gate (great fuel if you’re headed to South Street’s festivities just a short walk away), or, head inside for different specials. Bites span oysters on the half-shell, shrimp cocktail, ceviche, totopos, lobster rolls served with chips and more.

Fairmount Park Conservancy

Locals can head to East Fairmount Park to celebrate the Summer Solstice in Philly a little early. On Friday, June 20, Eco therapist and Lenape language keeper Krista Nelson will lead a two-mile hike through the woods of the park, and then finish off the evening with a group meditation. As FPC describes, the Solstice honors a deep sense of devotion to nature, Mother Earth, and the energizing power of the sun. During this hike, you’ll welcome the longest day of the year by focusing on intentions set in the winter and spring.

The hike will take participants to Randolf Creek at sunset where a “fun tribute” to the five major nature elements will take place. The event ($10) kicks off at 6:30 p.m., and participants are instructed to arrive at least five minutes early. The 2-mile hike is appropriate for adults and families with children ages 14 and up, minors must be registered and accompanied by an adult. More information on what to bring can be found online.
