Second suspect arrested in shooting of grandfather, child in Southwest Philadelphia

A second suspect is in custody in connection with the June shooting of a 71-year-old man and his 5-year-old grandson at a gas station in Southwest Philadelphia, police said.

U.S. marshals apprehended 22-year-old Keon Smith earlier this week in Franklin County, in Central Pennsylvania, a Philadelphia police spokesperson said, and he is set to be charged with attempted murder, conspiracy and other crimes after he is transported back to the city.

On June 24, a man told investigators that he was driving with his father and son on 61st Street when people inside a car behind him opened fire, according to police. He pulled into the Exxon location at 61st and Passyunk Avenue, and the gunmen allegedly continued shooting.

Though the driver was not hurt, his father was shot in the back and hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said. The child was grazed in his shoulder and treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

A short time after the shooting, officers found what they believed to be the suspects’ car nearby on the 6100 block of Buist Avenue. Police said the vehicle had previously been reported stolen in a robbery at Philadelphia International Airport.

In July, Antwan Grimes, 21, surrendered to authorities following a standoff at a house on the 6000 block of Buist Avenue, investigators said. He is currently being held on $650,000 bail, according to court documents.

There is still an active arrest warrant for a third suspect, 19-year-old Amir Johnson, according to police.
