Suspect charged in murder outside of World Meeting of Families

Philadelphia police have charged a man with the fatal stabbing at a SEPTA bus stop just a block away from the Convention Center where international pilgrims had flocked forthe World Meeting of Families.

Reginald Bell, 52, of the 300 block of South Broad Street, is charged with murder for the Sept. 24 stabbing of 47-year-old William Vaughn, police said Monday.

Vaughn was fatally stabbed in the chest around 6:42 a.m. on Sept. 24 —a day before Pope Francis visited Philadelphia —while waiting at a bus stop at Broad and Arch Streets.

Police caught images of the suspect traveling on a Broad Street Line train prior to the stabbing.

SEPTA police detained Bell onNov. 23 after recognizing him as looking similar to the suspect.

“SEPTA police officers conducted a pedestrian investigation on a suspect who was identified as Reginald Bell and appeared similar to a suspect in a patrol alert,” police said.

The Pennsylvania Convention Center, located just two blocks away from the murder scene on Arch Street, was where thousands of devout Catholics celebratedthe World Meeting of Families in September.
