Chicago Bears wide receiver Javon Wims lost an appeal of his suspension and will miss the next two games, multiple outlets reported on Wednesday.
The NFL maintained its views on Wims’ two-game suspension, which was initially handed down Monday, for sucker-punching New Orleans Saints defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Sunday night.
Shortly after Gardner-Johnson ripped the mouthpiece off the facemask of Wims during the opening possession of the second half of the Saints’ victory, Wims ran behind Johnson, attempted to rip the chain off from around his neck, and delivered a pair of punches to the helmet of the New Orleans’ defensive back.
A scrum ensued and Wims was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.
His suspension will be without pay. The Bears (5-3) are scheduled to play the Tennessee Titans on Sunday and the Minnesota Vikings on Nov. 16. Following the team’s bye week, Wims will be eligible to return Nov. 29 at Green Bay.
Gardner-Johnson on Monday denied a report that he spat on Wims during the game, prompting the punch and the ensuing on-field fracas.
Wims, 26, has played parts of three seasons with the Bears. In 28 career games (seven starts), the Georgia product has caught 27 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. He has five receptions for 35 yards through eight games this season.
