A Temple University employee was stabbed Tuesday morning on the college’s main campus in North Philadelphia, officials said.
The attack occurred at around 7:15 a.m. on the 1000 block of Montgomery Avenue, according to the university. In a message to students and staff, Temple administrators described the stabbing as “an unprovoked incident by an individual who appeared to be in mental distress.”
Temple said the employee suffered a wound to their right arm but was “alert and conscious” when they were transported to the hospital for further treatment. A university spokesperson declined to specify the victim’s job title, age or gender.
The suspect fled east on Montgomery toward 8th Street, school officials said. Campus authorities have reviewed camera footage and shared it with Philadelphia police, according to Temple, and the university’s police department released surveillance images Tuesday afternoon.
“The safety of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority,” Temple’s vice president for public safety, Jennifer Griffin, and deputy director of operations, Denise Wilhelm, said in the message. “We are grateful for the efforts of our police officers, who responded swiftly.”
Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to contact Temple police at 215-204-1234.
