In celebration of their 10th annual ‘Clay Fest,’ The Clay Studio Center for Innovation in Ceramic Art is welcoming folks of all ages for an afternoon of free earthy activities.

With the support of PNC Arts Alive, this year’s Clay Fest celebration will feature an assortment of complimentary clay projects, including clay animation, plushie hearts, wheel-throwing demonstrations, a group sculpture extravaganza, and more.

It all begins with a Sidewalk Chalkout in collaboration with World of Hearts, a project inspired by the legacy of artist and creator Hesh Halper, a Philadelphia native. Known for adorning New York City with over 100,000 chalk hearts on its sidewalks and walls, Halper became known as the New York Romantic. His street art transformed a city known for its hustle and bustle into a romantic canvas, and the impact he made on the city and the artistic community remains to this day.

Clay Fest attendees are invited to chalk hearts in front of the building as they arrive at The Clay Studio to kick off the annual ceramic event. The Clay Studio’s partnership with World of Hearts inspired several of this year’s activities that feature a theme around the heart symbol. Recognized as the near-universal emblem of love and compassion, the heart transcends cultural boundaries and helps to connect communities.

“For a decade, Clay Fest has exemplified our belief that creative experiences should be accessible to all,” said Josie Bockelman, Deputy Director at The Clay Studio. “This celebration welcomes everyone to discover the joy of working with clay, fostering creative expression, and building bonds that strengthen our neighborhood and city. As we mark this milestone, The Clay Studio remains committed to providing free arts programming that breaks down barriers and nurtures a more connected, vibrant community.”

Clay Fest is a rain or shine event and all of the activities are free and open to the public. The annual celebration takes place at The Clay Studio (1425 N. American St.) on Saturday, June 14, from noon to 5 p.m.
