The Do’s and Don’ts of working from home

During these unprecedented times, working from home for a good majority of us is the new normal. Whether you were someone who was used to this concept, or a newbie to the home office life, it’s been an adjustment to be stuck safely at home day after day. To help combat any stir crazy notions you may be getting, David Neff founder and president of Neff —one of the city’s leading marketing agencies—has provided a few tips on the Do’s and Don’ts of working from home.

DO continue to stick to a daily routine

Neff: Wake up early and give yourself time to answer emails, stay up-to-date on the latest headlines, and enjoy a cup of coffee without the morning rush. Use this time to gather your thoughts, get a morning workout in, etc.

DO practice self-care

Neff: It’s important for your overall well-being to continue to groom regularly and get dressed for the day. You can still remain comfortable without compromising your appearance.

DO take time for yourself

Neff: If you’ve ever considered making any self-improvements, whether that means taking time to reflect or to learn a new skill – the time is now. What is good for the mind is good for your wellbeing, productivity and your professional/personal happiness.

DO nurture relationships

Neff: Whether you’re checking in on a family member, friend or professional relationship, a simple call, text or video chat goes a long way, especially during these times of uncertainty.

DO make business decisions that are a part of the solution, not part of the problem

Neff: Regardless of the industry, every business owner should continue to make business decisions that are part of the solution (i.e. make life easier on your clientele, not your bottom line.)

DON’T take this “down time” for granted

Neff: Use it as an opportunity to evaluate, strategize and refine your business practices. Consider new ways to increase productivity. Become even more strategic. Take time to research issues, vendors, new disciplines or anything else you think about doing, but never find the time.

DON’T stop moving

Neff: You should still prioritize your physical health by making it a point to exercise regularly. Go for a run and get some fresh air, take the dog for a walk or take advantage of some of the online workout offerings available to you.

DON’T forget to catch-up on your reading and listening

Neff: Invest time in reading books, listening to podcasts and take in as much constructive content as possible. When time is at a premium, draw inspiration from thought leaders and consume as many fresh ideas while you can.

DON’T hold grudges by living in the past

Neff: If social distancing has taught us anything, it’s made us realize the value of relationships, even if they’re “on pause” for the moment. As my father used to say, “Put down the scorecard and call them.”

DON’T forget about your people

Neff: Take care of your employees— when this is all over they will never forget that you were there for them. They will keep your clients, customers and future business prospects happy.
