The grilled cheese meets its match

You’ve grown up, so why shouldn’t your comfort food mature with you? World Cafe Live’s latest monthly Drinking & Dining series spruces up the grilled cheese via artisan breads and cheeses, and substitutes the tomato soup by pairing the sandwich with craft beers.

“It’s all about comfort food,” says World Cafe Live manager Ryan Starr. “But we’re providing people with something above and beyond what they’d expect to get from Kraft singles and white bread.”

The events had their debut back in April (which, if you didn’t know, is National Grilled Cheese Month). Tastings have included cheeses provided by DiBruno Brothers and Lancaster’s Hillacres Pride Farms, breads from Wild Flour Bakery and artisan pizza paired with canned microbrews. This month’s tasting features a variety of Dogfish Head beers.

Starr describes the atmosphere at these tastings as far more relaxed than the venue’s regular wine dinners. “When you go to a wine dinner, it’s a sit-down meal with folded napkins,” he says. “Beer is becoming something as pair-able as the finest wines, but people at the beer events tend to be a little more laid-back. They’re here for grilled cheese, not filet mignon.”
