Karl “Dice Raw” Jenkins is making a stop at Eastern State Penitentiary to perform and talk about his new album, “Jimmy’s Back.” Fittingly for the venue, songs on the album — inspired by Michelle Alexander’s best-selling “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Color Blindness”— address the black male incarceration epidemic in the U.S.
Jenkins included ex-felons as featured artists.
The Grammy nominated hip-hop artist is a local. He’s known for his work with The Roots, writing, performing on and producing pieces of their albums, and for his group Nouveau Riche.
The prison performance is part of Eastern State’s free Searchlight Series. “Jimmy’s Back” is due out Aug. 4.
