The Women’s Film Festival: What to expect in 2024

The Women’s Film Festival kicks off this week on Aug. 15 and will take place around the city until Aug. 25.

The 10 days of programming will feature screenings, workshops and networking opportunities for the filmmakers and audiences alike with submissions from around the country and the globe.

Opening night will feature an “edge-of-your-seat” thriller from two local creatives. ‘Last Known Location‘ comes from West Chester natives Aimee Theresa and her husband Danny Donnelly. The film will be screened at the Perelman building of the Philadelphia Art Museum followed by a party at Rittenhouse Grill.

And as the release notes, subsequent films for the fest will then primarily take place at the Neighborhood House Performance Venue at Christ Church, and through a special “Dinner and a Movie” night at City Winery. The dark comedy for one, ‘Glass Casa’ by filmmaker Laa Marcus, will take part in the event at City Winery (Aug. 20), and a series of localized content titled the Philly Philms Shorts Program will also happen throughout the event (Aug. 17.)

Other highlights for The Women’s Film Festival span the documentary film ‘Jailhouse to Milhouse’, which follows the courageous journey of Pamela Hayden, voice of Milhouse and several other characters on ‘The Simpsons’, and the closing night horror film ‘Lost Joy’, co-written by Winter Bassett. Bassett and several of the cast and crew members will be in attendance on Aug. 25 as well.

Also of note, as the release states, Aug. 18 is the 104th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. ‘Project 19: The Leap for Equality‘ is the story of 120 female skydivers from 22 countries making history. Melanie Curtis, author, podcast host and the current Executive Director of the Women’s Skydiving Network will be at the screening (she has jumped out of an airplane over 12,000 times.)

But, the release also notes that the festival had to change the original date for ‘Project 19’ because the crew are going to be skydiving into a huge stadium to celebrate Megan Rapinoe’s retirement from women’s soccer and retiring her jersey. You can check online for any updates.
