Fun things to do in Philly this weekend

Looking for some fun and unique things to do in Philly this weekend? We’ve got you covered.

Family Field Day at FDR Park

This Saturday holds a special occasion for all ages: Family Field Day at FDR Park will be in full swing on Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and locals are invited to participate.

The active event will host a few different opportunities to join in on sports (like baseball, softball, soccer, football, girls’ rugby, and more), plus check out giveaways, food trucks, a DJ, face painting, balloon artists, free ice cream and other surprises. The event, which is free, will take place at the FDR Boathouse Lawn in front of the American Swedish Historical Museum at 1500 Pattison Ave. Tickets are not required to participate, but, registration is recommended online.

As a release notes,  Family Field Day will also provide information highlighting the FDR Park Plan, which features high-quality athletic fields and courts interspersed with nature trails, woodlands, meadows, and creeks. It’s the first of its kind in Philadelphia to incorporate climate change projections and climate resiliency, and the renewed FDR Park will have more nature and more access to water.

Itashemi Night at Ogawa Kappo & Sushi

This week, Midnight Pasta Co.’s Natalia Lepore Hagan is joining Ogawa Chef Carlos Wills for an Itameshi night.  Itameshi is a blend of Japanese and Italian cuisines, and the melding of the two cultural bites first started in Japan in the 1920s and eventually became popular in the 1990s, a release notes. On Aug. 1, locals can get a taste of the dinner with two featured seatings: One at 5:30 p.m. and one at 8 p.m.

The dinner ($165) will boast 7 courses with an optional drink pairing to coincide with the food. What Philadelphians will get with every bite and sip is a collaborative dining journey that will marry the rich, robust flavors of Italian cooking with the delicate, nuanced flavors of Japanese gastronomy.

Menu items span miso soup, a sashimi platter, wagyu ravioli, spizzulus with uni, spaghetti alla chitarra, and more Itameshi style dishes.

The Aquarium in general also offers one-of-a-kind views of the species through its shark tunnel underneath the 21-foot exhibit or across its shark bridge—which happens to be the largest of its kind in the country.

Other activities for the occasion include a Shark Talk with an expert,  a shark-themed light show in the Rotunda at the top of every hour, a chance to catch a shark-centric 3D movie, plus a chance test your knowledge during the Walk the Plank: Shark Edition trivia game show.
