The I-95 corridor — from Philly to Boston — will be slammed with a wintry mix of rain, snow, and sleet starting with this evening’s commute and ending early Sunday.
The cold mess even has a name: Winter Storm Iola.
Anywhere from 6 inches to a foot of snow are possible in some areas but because the temps will hover just at freezing, it could also be just one be washout.
The storm is unusual in that it developed in the Gulf of Mexico, meaning its pack with much more moisture than the usual winter blast from Canada.
Weather forecasters also expect the storm to undergo “bombogenesis” — a “rapid pressure drop of at least 24 millibars in 24 hours” that will greatly boost the power of its punch, CBS Boston reports. The worst will come Saturday evening and then the whole storm will make a beeline for the Atlantic as it leaves New England.
This same system dumped snow in New Mexico and Texas Thursday.
