Three men gunned down over the weekend in Philly

Three men were gunned down over the weekend, and detectives were investigating after a body was found Monday in West Philadelphia.

A passerby found a dead 29-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the back of his head at 10:20 a.m. Monday in the woods near 63rd and Market streets, near city limits, police said. Investigators have not yet ruled the death a homicide.

Officers responding to a report of a person with a gun on Friday night found a 46-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest inside a property on the 200 block of E. Montana Street in East Mount Airy. The victim was later identified as Anthony Abel, who lives on the block, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Saturday, just after 2 p.m., authorities discovered Anthony Dixon, 29, of West Oak Lane, with gunshot wounds to his head, back and shoulder sitting in the driver’s seat of a gray Chevrolet Impala on the 5500 block of W. Godfrey Avenue in Fern Rock.

Police rushed him to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he died less than 30 minutes later.

Almost exactly an hour later, 22-year-old Ruben Alvarez was shot in the back on the 2800 block of N. Mutter Street in Fairhill, authorities said. Alvarez, who lived in Hunting Park, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police reported no arrests connected to the homicides.

Mutter, a narrow street, was the scene of another shooting on Monday at 9:30 a.m. when three men were shot just a block north of where Alvarez was killed.

A 45-year-old man was shot in his stomach and both legs, and a 30-year-old man was shot in his groin, stomach and both legs. Both were listed in critical condition, police said. A third victim, a 28-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the right arm.

It’s unclear if the shooting was related to Alvarez’s murder. No arrests have been made.

A 48-year man is fighting for his life after he was shot multiple times in the legs, groin and lower back at 6:30 a.m. Monday on the 2800 block of N. Front Street, a few blocks away from the scene of the triple shooting and Alvarez’s killing. No arrests have been reported.

Philadelphia’s murder rate is up 16 percent compared to this point last year, according to police data. Through Sunday, 116 people have been killed.

Shots rang out early Monday morning in Frankford, and officers found a 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his right hip just before 7 a.m. on the 1600 block of Foulkrod Street. He’s been listed in critical condition, and detectives continue to investigate.

Meanwhile, on Sunday afternoon, a 44-year-old man was stabbed twice in the back inside a home in Southwest Philly, according to police. He was listed in critical condition, and no arrests have been made.

In North Philadelphia, at around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, officers found a 36-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his stomach on the 2700 block of N. Ringgold Street. Officers rushed him to Temple University Hospital, where he was in critical condition.

Then, just before midnight Sunday, a 42-year-old man was shot in the left hand and hit in the back of the head with a pipe on the 4000 block of W. Girard Avenue in West Philly, police said. He showed up to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and is currently in stable condition.

Detectives confiscated a car but did not immediately make an arrest.

Officers did make an arrest after a 36-year-old man was shot once in the chest in an apartment early Sunday morning on the 7300 block of Montour Street in Burholme. The victim was in stable condition at Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Police took a suspect into custody and recovered a gun. No further details were released.
