Tiger looking forward to “rowdy” Philly crowds

DELAWARE COUNTY. Tiger Woods’ sore neck was healthy enough to board a plane from Florida to Philadelphia.

Now, he’s hoping it’ll be sturdy enough to endure a tournament of golf at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square — and give the Philadelphia region an up-close look at Woods in his professional career.

Woods was in town yesterday promoting the AT&T National, which is slated for July 1-4 at one of the region’s historic golfing gems. Right now, the world’s best golfer expects to play in the tournament. Of course, the results of an MRI later this week could alter those plans.

Just having Woods here walking the course, however, was a small victory. Club President David Boucher said he received a call late Sunday assuring him that the golfer would make the trip.

“We don’t get a chance to play old style venues like this very often, and when you do, you take advantage of it,” Woods said. “And Aronimink was as nice as can be to allow us to come here for two years.”

Woods has never played in Philadelphia before. In fact, the area hasn’t hosted a PGA Tour event since the Senior PGA Championship in 2003. So, what can he expect from the notoriously harsh Philly fans when he tees off on the first hole?

“I expect them to be loud and rowdy, there’s no doubt,” Woods said. “You know, I think that they will be supportive. I think this is a great sporting town, period. And to have golf come back to this city, I think is something that they are going to be very excited about.”
