Toddler killed in Kensington wreck: Police

Authorities are investigating a fatal car crash that killed a toddler in Kensington, and believe drag racing might be to blame.

Around 7:15 p.m., a speeding car slammed into the passenger side of the car carrying the toddler at Second and York streets. The three-year-old girl was thrown through the back passenger window, CBS Philly reported.

“It appears the striking vehicle that was going south on Second Street, being operated by the 17-year-old male, may have been driving at a high rate of speed,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told 6ABC . “Some witnesses are saying that 17-year-old driver was actually racing another vehicle.”

The teen apparently struck the car with the toddler, which was traveling westbound on York Street. The girl’s mother was driving, and her grandmother was a passenger in the Honda. According to 6ABC, their vehicle jumped the curb and hit a fire hydrant before the toddler was thrown from the window.

“When she was found on the sidewalk, she was not in a car seat. However, there is a car seat in the backseat of the vehicle,” Small said.

The child was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The17-year-old driver was transported to Temple University Hospitalin stable condition.
