Tom Wolf elected next governor of Pennsylvania

A Tom was elected governor of Pennsylvania on Tuesday.

But he didn’t have the last name Corbett.

Tom Wolf became the first candidate in modern state election history to defeat an incumbent in the race for the state’s highest office. Wolf, a Democrat from York, defeated Corbett in a landslide, according to unofficial election results.

In a letter emailed out to his supporters, Wolf wrote that “As your governor, I’ll be there working with you, and I can’t wait to see what we do together to help give Pennsylvania a fresh start.”

Regarding his opponent: “Governor Tom Corbett, Lt. Governor Jim Cawley, and their many supporters deserve our respect and admiration for running a campaign focused on the issues,” he wrote.

As of press time, Wolf gained about 64 percent of the vote, unofficial results show.

Corbett, who twice served as the state’s attorney general, received roughly 35 percent of the votes with 19 statewide districts reporting.

For Wolf, a businessman and former teacher, this was his first run at a public office. He will be sworn in as the 47th governor of the state in January 2015.

Not many surprises in the 2014 midterm elections.

Democratic US Rep. Bob Brady, longtime chairman of the Philadelphia Democratic Party, won re-election in the 1st Congressional district.

Democratic US Rep. Chaka Fattah, who is currently under a federal corruption investigation, won re-election in the 2nd Congressional District.

Democratic State Rep. Brendan Boyle won out in 13th Congressional District and graduated to the US House of Representatives. Boyle replaces Allison Schwartz, who withdrew her seat to run for Governor, but lost to Wolf in the primary.
