In 2013 Kayden Coleman received some unexpected news — he was pregnant.
Coleman, who is transgender, and his partner Elijah were obviously surprised as Coleman had been on testosterone for five years.
“I never thought about getting pregnant. Because of the male hormones,” Coleman, of Philadelphia, explained to
the Mirror.” I didn’t think it was a possibility. It was definitely a surprise.”
So what happened? Coleman at one point did stop taking his hormones, while in preparation for a surgery. Despite years of hormone therapy, Coleman became pregnant.
“One day my back was killing me,” Coleman recollected, looking back at the first signs that he was pregnant. “Elijah was going to give me a massage, so I lay on my front on the bed. It felt like there was a pillow under my stomach but there was no pillow.”
Coleman joked that he should get a pregnancy test, but then as the realities of the situation washed over him, he realized he could in fact be pregnant.
One positive pregnancy test later, and Coleman and Elijah were confirmed father’s and were married shortly after.
On delivery day, Coleman was in labor for four days, and told The Mirror how great the staff was with his delivery. However, Coleman emphasized that after a while he began to feel like an experiment:
“All the medical people were really nice but I did kind of feel like an experiment. While I was in labor, medical students kept coming in and out. It got to the point where I had to put my foot down and demand a c-section.”
At the end of it all Coleman and Elijah had a healthy baby named Azealia, who the pair say they can’t imagine life without.
