Trying to catch on with Phillies

As far as catching goes over recent years, the Phillies have been fortunate. Carlos Ruiz was a reliable field general during the greatest run in Phillies history. However, the catching post is up in the air in 2014.

Will the Phillies bring back the aging Ruiz? What’s the plan for Erik Kratz next year? How about Cameron Rupp? The rookie made his major league debut against the San Diego Padres. Rupp caught Tyler Cloyd, a familiar battery mate from their days at Triple-A Lehigh.

“I figured that was a good match,” Ryne Sandberg said. “They’ve caught each other most of this year. It’s a chance to see him with a pitcher he knows. That way he goes into the game feeling good. I’m anxious to see where he’s at.”

Rupp was with Double-A Reading at the start of the season. He hit .245 and was moved up after Tommy Joseph suffered a concussion. Rupp hit .269 at Lehigh and handled pitchers well.

“I didn’t want to see Tommy get hurt,” Rupp said. “That’s not what you want. But I had an opportunity and you want to take advantage of opportunities.”

Perhaps the third-round pick from the 2010 draft can make an impact next year.

“The Phillies need to do something next season behind the plate,” a NL scout said. “That’s a critical position. Ruiz has come on but how much has he got left in the tank? Why not take a look at some young guys there when you’re not in the race? It’ll be interesting what they do next season.”
