TSA finds explosives at Philadelphia International Airport

A Philadelphia International Airport terminal was shut down this morning as TSA agents detained a 29-year-old man who allegedly had explosives in his carry-on luggage, police said.

Agents stopped the man at a Terminal D security checkpoint at 6 a.m. as he attempted to board a flight to San Francisco. A Philadelphia Police bomb squad determined the material in his bag to be some type of fireworks, possibly homemade, a police spokeswoman said.

The man never entered the plane. Other passengers boarded at a different terminal and the flight was delayed about 30 minutes.

After the bomb squad cleared the area and determined there was no chance of any further incident, the terminal reopened around 6:30 a.m. The man remains in custody as the Philadelphia Police Department, the FBI and the TSA conduct a full investigation.

Investigators do not believe that the incident is related to any type of terrorist activity at this time, police said.

The incident comes two weeks after U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced that a new designer drug was discovered in a parcel at the Philadelphia International Airport. The seizure of the drug was the seventh in the country’s history.
