Two inmates stabbed during fight at Philadelphia jail

Two incarcerated men were stabbed during a fight Monday morning at Philadelphia’s Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, authorities said.

The violence occurred just before 8:45 a.m., and one of the inmates, a 26-year-old man, was hospitalized with multiple stab wounds to the back of his head and neck, police said. His injuries are not expected to be life-threatening.

Authorities said the other victim, a 23-year-old man, was stabbed once in the head and treated by medical personnel at CFCF. He was also listed in stable condition.

The Philadelphia Department of Prisons told Metro that the stabbings took place “during a fight involving multiple incarcerated people.”

“The housing unit was secured; the incident is under investigation,” PDP Communications Coordinator John Mitchell said in a statement. No further information was released.

In-person civilian visits were suspended at CFCF on Monday, though attorneys and other officials could still enter the jail.

CFCF, located in the jail campus on State Road in Northeast Philadelphia, is the city’s largest correctional facility, with a current population of more than 2,200 men.

PDP has been dealing with a severe staffing shortage, with around 40% of correctional officer positions being unfilled. The city’s jails are also being monitored by a federal court as a result of a settlement stemming from a class-action lawsuit brought by inmates over prison conditions.
