Two killed in overnight shootings

A teenager and a woman were killed in separate shootings Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning in Philadelphia, following a violent 24 hours during which gunfire left five people dead and 12 injured.

Police said officers responded to the 2500 block of W. Somerset Street in North Philadelphia just after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and found a 15-year-old boy with gunshot wounds to his chest and left thigh.

He was rushed to Temple University Hospital, where he died shortly before 11 p.m., according to police.

Several hours later, just before 4 a.m. Wednesday, a woman, described as about 20 years old, was gunned down at Hunting Park in North Philadelphia, authorities said.

She was shot in the jaw, head and chest by a gazebo on the 1000 block of W. Hunting Park Avenue. Police said she was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

No arrests have been made in connection with either killing, according to authorities.

Philadelphia has recorded 130 homicides, up 33% compared to last year and far more at this point than in any year since at least 2007, according to police department data.

Mayor Jim Kenney has said that he will provide to the city’s anti-violence plan next week along with his proposed budget.

“As we roll out of this pandemic and get our systems back in order, the violence will go down, and we’ll get back to some sense of normalcy,” he told reporters Tuesday.

Two people were also hospitalized Tuesday night following non-fatal shootings.

A 27-year-old man showed up to Temple University Hospital just after 11:30 p.m. after being shot in the right shoulder on the 2700 block of W. Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia, authorities said. There was no word on his condition.

Earlier, at around 9 p.m. Tuesday, a 19-year-old man was shot once in the right thigh near the corner of Broad Street and Allegheny Avenue, also in North Philadelphia.

Police said he is expected to recover.
