A man died after a car spun out of control early Thursday morning and hit a SEPTA bus, and, in a separate incident, a driver was killed when his vehicle ran into a dollar store, authorities said.
Police said a Nissan Maxima was spotted speeding just before 5 a.m. on Master Street near 12th Street in North Philadelphia when it collided with a Route 23 bus and hit several parked cars. Witnesses told investigators the car ran a stop sign.
A 41-year-old man who was a passenger in the Nissan died at Jefferson University Hospital at 7:50 a.m., investigators said. The driver, a 44-year-old man, was hospitalized in critical condition.
There were no other injuries.
Just after midnight Thursday, a Chevrolet Impala crashed into the front of a Family Dollar store on the 4700 block of W. Girard Avenue in the Parkside section of West Philadelphia, authorities said.
The driver, 36-year-old Lonnie D. Johnson, of West Philadelphia, died at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center just after 2 a.m., police said.
Accident investigators are still looking into both crashes.
