Two men charged for separate dog cruelty cases

A man who was found with a dead dog in his yard was charged Thursday with animal cruelty by the PSPCA.

PSPCA officers went to the North Phillyhome of Derrick Garner, 50, in July after an anonymous tip, finding a deceased dog in the yard, a dog with severe wounds, and a third dog suffering from untreated medical conditions, the PSPCA said.

Garner was arrested this week and charged with cruelty to animals for failing to seek veterinary care for his dogs.

The surviving dogs, Baby Girl and Poodge, have since been rehabilitated at the PSPCA and are available for adoption.

Meanwhile, also on Thursday, a South Philly man was charged with beating his ex-girlfriend and then beating her dog with a baseball bat, the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said.

Andrew Wallace, 40, of the 1600 block of S. 10th Street, faces three counts of animal cruelty.

The attack, which happened Tuesday, left the dog severely injured in one leg.

He is also charged with assaulting his girlfriend.

“Often, links have been drawn between the abuse of animals and violence against people. This seems to be the case here,” said PSPCA CEO Jerry Buckley.

No further information about the dog in question was available due to the pending criminal case.
