The School District of Philadelphia can’t seem to get a break when it comes to asbestos.
The district had to close down two more schools temporarily — James J. Sullivan Elementary in Wissinoming and Clara Barton Elementary in Feltonville.
The school district’s website reports that both schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday. The bus service for students will be suspended.
A release from the district states that staff from Barton will report to Feltonville Intermediate School, at 238 E. Wyoming Ave. on Thursday and Friday. Sullivan educators will report to Frankford High School, at 5000 Oxford Ave.
Although the schools are closed, the grab-and-go breakfast and lunch meals will still be available for pickup from both schools from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. on both Thursday and Friday.
Barton students can pick up their meals from Feltonville Intermediate School, at 238 E. Wyoming Ave.
Sullivan students can pick up their meals from Warren G. Harding Middle School, at 2000 Wakeling St.
Both schools are being temporarily closed due to damaged asbestos that was discovered during a building inspection. The release states that they are inspecting the building further to ensure it is safe for staff and students.
ABC reports that on Thursday afternoon, the teacher’s union will be joining officials to call on Gov. Tom Wolf to declare a state of emergency in Philadelphia schools.
Last week, Wolf announced his budget, in which he is planning asbestos and lead remediation, especially when it comes to schools.
