Two teens face adult charges in Overbrook murder

Philadelphia police have a 15-year-old boy in custody and are hunting for another in last week’s murder of an Overbrook man who was walking his dog.

Both will be charged with homicide as adults, police say. A 14-year-old boy, said to be cooperating with police, faces lesser charges.

Investigators say Jim Stuhlman, 51, was killed during a botched robbery.

Homicide Capt. James Clark said the boys had just finished playing basketball when they decided to rob someone. They began to approach  Stuhlman, who was also walking a dog, whom the boys decided was an easier target.

Police say Tyfine Hamilton, 15, shot Stuhlman once in the chest after a brief struggle. He is on the run and considered armed and dangerous. In custody is Brandon Smith, who along with Hamilton, is a freshman at Overbrook High School. Police say both have juvenile records for robbery.

Police did not identify the 14-year-old.

Police have seized several guns as a result of the investigation. Clark said that when patrol officers in the 19th district spotted Smith and the 14-year-old, one of them ran into a house. In the course of their investigation, police seized a gun from another juvenile who was not involved in Stuhlman’s murder.

Police also raided a house on W. Girard Avenue, where several guns were found. Ballistics tests are being conducted to see if any is the murder weapon.
