One man is in custody – and will likely be losing his U-Haul deposit – after crashing a rented truck through the wall of the Urban Village Brewery, a restaurant located in the Piazza at Schmidts on Wednesday afternoon.
According to police, the incident happened at about 12:57 p.m. when a 41-year-old male drove a U-Haul truck northbound – which is the wrong way on the one-way street – down Second Street through Northern Liberties.
When the vehicle was in front of the brewery, just before the intersection of Second Street and Germantown Avenue, the truck swerved, driving through the entrance of the business, law enforcement officials said.
According to police, the driver of the truck has been taken into custody on suspicion of DUI, and he has been transported to Hahnemann Hospital after complaining of leg pain. As of 4 p.m., the driver’s condition at the hospital was unknown, police said.
Also, law enforcement officials said that the city’s Department of L&I has been contacted to inspect the building, as there was structural damage caused by the crash.
