This rematch has been a long time coming. O’Malley was beaten by Vera just over 3 years ago but has not lost a fight since that TKO defeat. Now the bantamweight champion of the world, O’Malley looks to right the only wrong on his record, that defeat to Vera.
His opponent comes into this bout with a 23-8-1 record and has won 5 of his last 6 fights. O’Malley is the favorite coming into this one, but it would hardly be surprising to see Vera at least take this the distance. He’s yet to win a UFC title and this would be a huge statement win for the veteran.
Dustin Poirier remains one of the top dogs in the UFC and will fight Benoit Saint-Denis this evening, who comes into the fight with a 13-1 record. He debuted back in 2021 and since then has made quite the name for himself. Whether it’s viral knockouts or technical excellence, the Frenchman knows no fear and won’t be intimidated by Poirier.
Speaking of Poirier, the 34 year old has seen it all at this stage of his career. His striking is some of the best in the division and he’ll be looking to prove he can still hang with some of the faster up and comers in the division following a recent knockout loss.
Poirier is an underdog in this bout, but his experience will be incredibly valuable here. It’s easy to envision Benoi Saint Denis going on the attack early in a bid to stop Poirier setting into the fight, knowing that he has a big finish in the locker. However, the vet knows how to pace himself and gradually let his opponent run out of steam before stepping on the gas. I like Dustin Poirier here.
