Union reach agreement to transfer midfielder José Martínez to Corinthians

The José Martínez era in Philadelphia has come to an end. On Saturday, Tom Bogert reported that Martínez’s transfer to Corinthians was done, and the Union made the transfer official on Monday.

Martínez will join Série A side Corinthians for up to $2 million.

Philadelphia Union agree to transfer with Corinthians for José Martínez

Since joining the tram in December 2019 on a $325,000 transfer fee from Zulia FC, “El Brujo” made 108 appearances (100 starts) for the Boys in Blue in league play, scoring three goals and adding 12 assists. El Brujo made 148 total appearances with the Union throughout all competitions.

During 2024, Martínez has appeared in 16 league matches with 13 being starts. He tallied one assist in 1,019 minutes.

His first-ever MLS goal with the Union came on June 21, 2023, at Orlando City SC, and will be one engraved in Union history.

Martínez has played a pivotal role in Philly’s midfield since his debut. Being a part of the 2020 MLS Supporters’ Shield squad, the 2022 MLS Cup Final squad, and a 2023 MLS All-Star, Martínez cemented a legacy in Philadelphia both on the pitch and as a fan favorite.

“Jose has played an important role in the club’s success over his five seasons with the Union,” said Sporting Director, Ernst Tanner in a statement released by the club. “He has steadily developed while with the Union, becoming incredibly dominant in the midfield and a key asset in the milestones the team has reached. We appreciate his dedication and passion to the team and city both on and off the field and wish him all the best in this next chapter.”

After the team signed midfielder Danley Jean Jacques on Aug. 8, Martínez’s departure seemed likely. El Brujo’s exit leaves Jesús Bueno, Leon Flach, and Jean Jacques as the holding midfield options for head coach Jim Curtin.

Philadelphia currently sits 10th in the Eastern Conference and is one point out of the final spot for the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. On Sunday, the Union lost to the Colorado Rapids in a penalty shootout in the third-place match of the 2024 Leagues Cup.
