The fire marshal is investigating a blaze that killed a woman and injured a man in South Philadelphia overnight.
Heavy smoke billowed from the second-story window of a two-story home on the 2200 block of South Croskey Street shortly before 2 a.m.
Firefighters had the flames under control by 2:10 a.m., but discovered the body of a woman, 55, on the bathroom floor. She was pronounced on the scene. Her death appears to be fire-related at this time.
A second man, 23, was injured when he jumped from the second-floor rear bedroom
window to escape the flames. He was taken to Methodist Hospital in stable condition
with minor cuts and smoke inhalation and will be transferred to Temple for further treatment.
According to police, the fire originated in the second-floor middle bedroom.
A third man, 56,
saw the mattress on fire when he checked the bedroom and attempted to put it out, but was overcome by smoke and had to leave through the front door.
A source from the fire department said that smoke alarms and batteries were well-installed.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The investigation is ongoing.
