UPDATED: Philadelphia Zoo employee killed by golf cart

A 59-year-old Philadelphia Zoo mechanic was killed Monday morning when a golf cart fell on him while he was working at the West Philadelphia wildlife park, authorities said.

According to Officer Rhonda Bowens, a police spokeswoman, the golf cart fell on the employee at 11:08 a.m.He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and he was pronounced dead at 11:44 a.m.

Dana Lombardo, Zoo spokeswoman, said she believes”One of his team members came to the area and discovered him.”

Officials aren’t sure how the incident occurred, but Lombardosaid that because of his job, “One of his duties was to fix the carts.”

Lombardo added that he was found “Kind of in a garage that’s out of the public view.”

The mechanic, who joined the zoo in March 2000, was married, but Lombardo said she isn’t sure if he had any children.

“He was a beloved employee,” Lombardo said. “It’s a sad day here for us.”
