Violent holiday weekend in Philadelphia ends with 2 homicides

Two men were killed in separate shootings Monday night, capping a particularly violent Memorial Day Weekend in Philadelphia.

Authorities said a 23-year-old man died following a shooting that also injured two other people. It occurred at around 11 p.m. on the 4100 block of Parrish Street in West Philadelphia.

The man, who was shot several times, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released his name.

Police said a 30-year-old woman who sustained multiple gunshot wounds was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in critical condition. The other victim, a 36-year-old man, was struck in the leg and is being treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Several hours earlier, just after 6:30 p.m., a 26-year-old man was fatally shot on the 1700 block of W. Oxford Street in North Philadelphia, police said.

A 23-year-old man who was also caught in the gunfire was hospitalized in critical condition with several wounds.

Investigators did not report any arrests in the immediate aftermath of either shooting.

Since Saturday, 14 people have been killed in Philadelphia, bringing the city’s homicide toll, which had been trending slightly downward, to 209, around the same number as this time in 2021.

“The violence that we experienced over the holiday weekend is unimaginable,” Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw tweeted Tuesday. “Far too many people are illegally utilizing firearms, and their actions are destroying lives & entire communities.”

“We cannot allow these crimes to go unanswered, and will do everything in our power to bring justice to all of those impacted,” she added.

On Tuesday, SEPTA transit police rushed a 32-year-old woman to the hospital after she was shot twice in the leg at around 2:30 p.m. on the 800 block of E. Allegheny Avenue in Kensington. She is expected to survive, according to authorities.

A 41-year-old man was shot once in the chest at around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on the 3200 block of Clifford Street in Strawberry Mansion, authorities said. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.

Someone shot a 33-year-old woman in the chest at around 2 a.m. Tuesday near the corner of Shelbourne and Willard streets in Kensington.

Police said she refused treatment after being taken to the hospital and left without speaking to investigators.

In Northeast Philadelphia, a 19-year-old man was shot in the head just after 1:15 a.m. Tuesday on the 5500 block of Tulip Street in the Wissinoming neighborhood, according to authorities. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Investigators said a 61-year-old man was struck in the elbow when shots rang out at around 12:45 a.m. on the 5100 block of Chester Avenue in Kingsessing. He is expected to physically recover.

Minutes earlier, in an unrelated incident, a 26-year-old man was shot in the shoulder on the 400 block of South Street in the Queen Village area, police said. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
