Voter registration deadline approaching ahead of primary

The voter registration deadline is about two weeks away for the May 16 primary, when Philadelphians will nominate their political party’s choices for mayor, City Council and other positions.

In order to cast a ballot in the primary, residents must register to vote by Monday, May 1. The process can be completed online at www.pavoterservices.pa.gov.

Philadelphia residents can also register in-person at the City Commissioners’ office at 520 N. Columbus Boulevard or by visiting Room 142 at City Hall. Voting applications are also available at post offices, libraries and state-run liquor stores.

People intending to vote by mail in the primary must submit an application no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9.

Primaries are closed in Pennsylvania, meaning only registered Republicans and Democrats can vote for candidates in their respective parties.

Independent voters and members of other parties can vote May 16 on four questions that appear on the ballot in Philadelphia.

In addition to mayor and council, city voters will be choosing nominees for register of wills, sheriff and a host of judicial positions.
